The world of modern art seems to be expanding at an incredible rate. An extension of rock poster art and similar pop-art movements, this multiplying scene is being fortified by a a bevy of new retailers, artists, and outlets for engaging with these 3D renderings. The film “A Vinyl Frontier” focuses’ on the culture surrounding the art, and the questions that arise from a medium who’s price point falls well below the rest of the art world. Ideas about consumer culture, the nature of collecting, and fierce opinions on variant editions ensue.
Zana’s passion for the subject matter is evident, and his interviews with the artists that are fueling this movement are insightful and fun. Art is often branded as inaccessible and flighty, unworthy of time much less dollars. Vinyl toys are a way of democratizing art and making it something that anyone can enjoy. Not everyone can afford canvas’ and originals, and the vinyl toy industry is capturing the attention of a new crop of art-lovers who don’t give a shit whether or not your walls are white. We chatted w filmmaker Daniel Zana about the genesis of the film, process of making it, and his own forays into 3D vinyl art.
